SCHOLARSHIP RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Structural Basis of Macromolecule Folding and Unfolding by ATP-Driven Protein Machines
We have an opening for two Summer Interns to pursue their independent research in the Tsai group at Baylor College of Medicine. These are paid, full-time positions for raising sophomores and above to gain research experience. Our summer internships last 10 weeks, and students may continue working on their project during the semester for course credit. Enthusiasm for experimental research, a dedication to complete their project, and a willingness to learn are essential. No research experience is required, but skills commonly used in a biochemistry lab are an advantage.

A current focus of the Tsai team is to understand how molecular chaperones and related stress-response proteins maintain protein homeostasis. We use biochemistry, chemical biology, protein engineering, and structural analysis techniques to pursue mechanistic studies at the single-molecule level. In addition, we work with bacteria and yeast, which serve as valuable model organisms. Students maintain a notebook and read the scientific literature, assist with and write their own manuscripts, attend research seminars, and present their work in oral or poster form. A strong work ethic, including the ability to prioritize tasks, use good judgment, and complete duties, is essential.

The Tsai team is dedicated to fostering and cultivating an inclusive learning environment to support trainees in reaching their full potential. We occupy newly renovated research space on the main campus of Baylor College of Medicine at the heart of the Texas Medical Center. To apply, please send a cover letter, a transcript, and a current resume listing any previous lab or research experience to Dr. Francis Tsai, Professor of Biochemistry (Email: ftsai@bcm.edu).
