Electives

MSCI 1125: Physical Readiness Training
Cr. 1. (0-3). Prerequisites: students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 signed by physician prior to attendance. Open to all students. Utilizes Army fitness techniques; develops strength, flexibility and endurance; develops self-confidence through leadership training and physical activities.

MSCI 1126: Physical Readiness Training
Cr. 1. (0-3). Prerequisites: students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 signed by physician prior to attendance. Open to all students. Utilizes Army fitness techniques; develops strength, flexibility and endurance; develops self-confidence through leadership training and physical activities.

MSCI 1131: Intermediate Physical Fitness
Cr. 1. (0-3). Prerequisites: students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 signed by physician prior to attendance. Physically and mentally demanding activities designed to challenge students through team building exercises to improve strength and stamina utilizing Army fitness techniques. Students compete for Ranger Challenge Team positions.

First Year

MSCI 1210: Introduction to Leadership
Cr. 2. (1-2). Prerequisites: department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 prior to attendance. Critical thinking, goal setting, time management, physical fitness, and stress management related to leadership, officership, and the Army profession. Students will execute practical exercises with upper division ROTC cadets.

MSCI 1211: Introduction to Leadership for Non-Cadets
Cr. 2. (2-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Students learn how critical thinking, goal setting, time management, physical fitness, and stress management relate to leadership, officership, and the Army profession.

MSCI 1220: Introduction to Leadership II
Cr. 2. (1-2). Prerequisites: department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 prior to attendance. Overview of leadership fundamentals such as setting direction, problem solving, listening, presenting briefs, providing feedback, and using effective writing skills. Students will execute practical exercises with upper division ROTC cadets.

MSCI 1221: Introduction to Leadership II for Non-Cadets
Cr. 2. (2-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Overview of leadership fundamentals such as setting direction, problem solving, listening, presenting briefs, providing feedback, and using effective writing skills.

 

Second Year

MSCI 2210: Foundations of Leadership
Cr. 2. (2-2). Prerequisites: department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 prior to attendance. Explore dimensions of creative and innovative tactical leadership strategies and styles, and practice aspects of personal motivation and team building. Students will execute practical exercises with upper division ROTC cadets.

MSCI 2211: Foundations of Leadership for Non-Cadets
Cr. 2. (2-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Explore the dimensions of creative and innovative tactical leadership strategies and styles, and practice aspects of personal motivation and team building.

MSCI 2220: Foundations of Leadership II
Cr. 2. (2-2). Prerequisites: department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r and DA 3425 prior to attendance. Theoretical basis of the Army Leadership Requirements Model and exploration of dynamics of adaptive leadership. Students will execute practical exercises with upper division ROTC cadets.

MSCI 2221: Foundations of Leadership II for Non-Cadets
Cr. 2. (2-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Further study of the theoretical basis of the Army Leadership Requirements Model and explores the dynamics of adaptive leadership.

MSCI 2810: Leader's Training Course (LTC)
Cr. 8. Prerequisite: approval of the department chair. No military obligation is associated with this course. Student will not receive credit for both the total combination of MSCI 1210:1220:2210:2220 and 2810. Four week off-campus field training practicum. Introduces student to the Army and leadership

 

Third Year

MSCI 3310: Adaptive Team Leadership
Cr. 3. (3-2). Prerequisites: department approval required. Challenges cadets to study, practice, and evaluate adaptive leadership skills as they are presented with the demands of preparing for their ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC).

MSCI 3311: Adaptive Team Leadership for Non-Cadets
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Challenging scenarios and land navigation training related to small-unit tactical operations are used to develop self awareness and critical thinking skills.

MSCI 3320: Applied Leadership
Cr. 3. (3-2). Prerequisite: department approval required. Increasingly intense situational leadership challenges build cadet awareness and skills in leading tactical operations at the squad and platoon level. Conduct military briefings and develop proficiency in garrison operation orders.

MSCI 3321: Applied Leadership for Non-Cadets
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Students will focus on exploring, evaluating, and developing skills in decision making, persuading, and motivating team members.

MSCI 3398: Independent Study
Cr. 3 per semester or more by concurrent enrollment. Prerequisite: junior standing and consent of department chair.

MSCI 3491: Leadership Development and Assessment Course
Cr. 4. Prerequisite: MSCI 3320 or consent of the chair. Off-campus field training practicum stressing application of leadership management with emphasis on tactical and special military skills. Places students in demanding and stressful leadership situations.

 

Fourth Year

MSCI 4310: Adaptive Leadership
Cr. 3. (3-2). Prerequisite: department approval required. Students develop proficiency in planning, executing, and assessing complex operations functioning as a staff member, and providing leadership-performance feedback, coaching and mentoring to fellow ROTC cadets.

MSCI 4311: Adaptive Leadership for Non-Cadets
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. Students develop proficiency in planning and assessing complex operations functioning as a staff member, and providing leadership-performance feedback, coaching, and mentoring.

MSCI 4320: Leadership in a Complex World
Cr. 3. (3-2). Prerequisite: department approval required. MSCI 4320 is a continuation of MSCI 4310. Cadets are given situational opportunities to assess risk, make sound ethical decisions, and provide coaching and mentoring to fellow ROTC cadets.

MSCI 4321: Leadership in a Complex World for Non-Cadets
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites:  department approval required; students must provide CC 139-r prior to attendance. Open to all students. No military commitment is required. MSCI 4321 is a continuation of MSCI 4311 in developing proficiency in planning, executing, and assessing complex operations as a staff.

MSCI 4398: Indpendent Study
Cr. 3 per semester. Prerequisite: senior standing and consent of department chair.
