Research Interest
My research interests have generally been in the area of cognitive/behavioral models of psychopathology and their implications for assessment and treatment. I have emphasized models involving processes of self-control or self-management. At various points my research has focussed on populations including socially anxious college students, paraphilias, smokers attempting to quit, and depressed adults and children. In recent years most of my work has followed from my self-management model of depression. From this model I have developed a therapy program which has been systematically evaluated in a series of outcome studies. Self-management deficits in depressed individuals have been investigated in a second series of studies. The implications of these findings for depression in children have been explored as well. Currently my interests focus in three areas: (1) Cognitive models of memory and their implication for clinical problems of emotion and information processing in depression, (2) the efficacy of the self-management therapy program for different subpopulations; and (3) the relationship of therapy outcome to the skill acquisition process in therapy.
