Dual Credit BS/MS Program

The Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s program is designed to reduce the total number of undergraduate/graduate credit hours required to complete both degrees. The program is open to qualified University of Houston undergraduate Computer Science students wishing to continue their education at the graduate level immediately upon completion of the B.S. degree.

This program allows students to take up to six (6) graduate-level credit hours in Computer Science that can be applied to both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. To take advantage of dual credit, a student will need to: 1) apply and be approved to participate, 2) seek approval to enroll in 6 credit hours of dual credit, and 3) apply and be admitted to the M.S. Computer Science program.

Approval and completion of dual credit courses does not guarantee admission to the M.S. Computer Science program.

Prospective Students

Dual Credit Application Deadlines

  • June 1 for Fall semester
  • November 1 for Spring semester

Eligibility

An undergraduate student wishing to enroll in dual credit courses to count towards the Accelerated B.S./M.S. Program should complete an application to the Computer Science department—normally during the student’s junior year.

The minimum application requirements:

  1. Junior standing and completion of 24 credit hours of Computer Science coursework, with a minimum of 12 credit hours completed at University of Houston
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA over all course work completed at University of Houston
  3. Minimum 3.0 GPA over all Computer Science course work completed at University of Houston
  4. Approval from the Department of Computer Science via an application.

Students may apply as early as the semester in which they will meet the minimum application requirements.

Application

As you begin the application:

  1. Requires CougarNet authentication
  2. Enter your username, which is your CougarNetID followed by @cougarnet.uh.edu. For example, “CougarNetID@cougarnet.uh.edu”
  3. Click “Next”
  4. Enter your CougarNet password

Accelerated B.S./M.S. Application

Eligibility to enroll in dual credit courses does not constitute automatic admission to the graduate program.

Approved Current Students

Generally, all COSC 6000 level and a few COSC 7000 level graduate courses are eligible for dual credit, with the following exceptions:
  1. graduate admissions prerequisite courses (numbered between 6001 and 6013) are not eligible
  2. special topics, special problems, research, thesis/dissertation (6397 and higher) are not eligible
  3. Ph.D. core/breadth courses are not eligible

The following is a current list of graduate courses that are eligible. This list may be revised annually. All graduate course enrollment for dual credit requires formal approval through an Undergraduate General Petition.

Process for Enrolling in Dual Credit Courses:

To enroll in a graduate course for a given semester, submit an Undergraduate General Petition to the NSM Undergraduate Advising Center via email to kalexander3@uh.edu. On the general petition, include the following:

  1. I am in the Dual Credit BS/MS program and request enrollment in COSC 6XXX / 7XXX (include section number)
  2. I would like the course to be applied towards my BS as COSC advanced elective [note: consult with your undergraduate academic advisor for guidance on how it can be best used] and, if I am accepted for graduate admissions, towards a COSC MS degree.

Admission to the Graduate Program

Students enrolled in the dual credit program must complete all admissions requirements for the MS Computer Science program including GRE and other tests (if applicable) and formally apply to the graduate program. Students may apply in their second-final or final semester while completing the undergraduate degree. Visit the graduate admissions page for details.
