Religion and culture play a vital role in society and have a profound influence on the function of journalism, particularly in Asia. To further understand journalism in this region, the University of Houston Valenti School of Communication is hosting a symposium “Journalism in Asia: Current Trends and Challenges” on Thursday, April 26.
Symposium Highlights:
- The keynote address will be delivered by Janet Steele, associate professor journalism at the George Washington University and director of the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication. She is a frequent visitor to Southeast Asia where she lectures on topics ranging from the role of the press in a democratic society to specialized courses on narrative journalism.
- International speakers who have had extensive experiences as practicing journalists and/or as educators of journalists in Asia will lead two panel discussions exploring issues related to the intersection of culture and journalism, and trends and opportunities in journalism education.
- The Consul General of Indonesia will talk about the role of “digital diplomacy.”
