When the state of Texas is in need, Texans answer the call. That’s never been more true than with the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey across the Texas Gulf Coast region and catastrophic flooding in the Houston area.
Before the storm made landfall, the University of Houston football team relocated to Austin in order to have a place to practice. While there, a call was put out to teams in the state of Texas who were playing at home opening weekend of college football season and may have had equipment trucks available.
Baylor, SMU, North Texas, Texas Tech, Texas, Texas State and Houston answered the call to collect donations at two staging locations in Austin. Student-athletes from the Houston football program collected items including non-perishable food, personal care products, cleaning supplies, clothing, baby supplies and more. The players loaded them into the trucks for a Friday convoy to Houston.
For those still wanting to help, people are encouraged to support the rescue and recovery efforts through charities on the ground, including the Red Cross. The international network is on the ground in Houston providing emergency relief. To donate to the Red Cross, please click here.
The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund will accept tax deductible flood relief donations. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
