HOUSTON, January 23, 2017 – The University of Houston will be hosting or taking part in several exciting events related to Super Bowl LI from a conversation about race & sports to a summit on sports media. Please coordinate any interviews or coverage with University of Houston Media Relations.

January 23 

Super Masculinities Panel - Rockwell Pavilion, M.D. Anderson Library 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Hosted by Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies come be a part of a conversation with community and academic leaders about how the “big game” informs American masculinity.


January 24 

Race & Sports Panel - Rockwell Pavilion, M.D. Anderson Library 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. 

Special guests Dr. John Carlos, Olympic medal winner and Stanford Routt, UH Alum and former NFL player will discuss African Americans’ history of resistance and contemporary protest by professional athletes. Melanie Lawson, KTRK ABC-13 anchor, will serve as moderator.


January 26-28

“Deflategate” Topic of Moot Court National Championship - Bob Casey Federal Courthouse in Downtown Houston

Days before Super Bowl LI is played in Houston, another national championship will be decided in the city: 16 of the nation's top law school moot court teams will square off over the hypothetical question of how they would have argued the NFL's "deflategate" controversy if the case had gone to the U.S. Supreme Court.


January 31

Summit on Sports Media - Student Center South, Houston Ballroom 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Co-produced and hosted by the Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston and Leverage Sports Marketing, the Summit on Sports Media is a daylong conference featuring interactive panels and talks that highlight the best practices and emerging trends that brands are using to tell compelling stories. This event will address the technological developments shaping the sports communication field – such as virtual reality and augmented reality – and how major sports brands are applying them to engage with Millennial and Gen Z audiences.


February 3

ESPN’s The Undefeated Presents a Conversation on Race, Sports & Culture - Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, Wortham Theatre 2 p.m.

This special event will feature a dynamic one-on-one discussion between an athlete and a hip-hop artist. The event will also include talks from former professional athletes who will speak on their shift into sports media.
