Houston is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, and a new group of entrepreneurs will step into the marketplace on Saturday, with a graduation ceremony for the University of Houston SURE™ program, designed to teach what it takes to run a business.
SURE™ – Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship – was founded by Saleha Khumawala, Robert Grinaker Professor of Accounting at UH’s Bauer College of Business. To qualify for the program, people must have a concrete idea for a business, be able to demonstrate that they are serious about it and come from or plan to serve an underserved population.
Khumawala and Bauer graduate students teach the basics of business and help them create a business plan. Saturday’s graduation will include special guests, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, UH System Regent Paula Mendoza, and Beth Robertson, former chair of the Board of Regents.
Graduates will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to local investors following the ceremony.

WHO: Students from the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 sessions will participate in the event, which
includes the opportunity to pitch local investors with an idea.
WHEN: Saturday, April 29. Mayor Sylvester Turner is scheduled to speak at 9 a.m.
Graduates will pitch their business ideas at 11 a.m. and again in the afternoon.
