Since 2007, the University of Houston's Honors College has brought top scholars to campus to participate in the Ross M. Lence Master Teacher Residency. Through this program, academic leaders interact with UH faculty and students through lectures, workshops, luncheons and discussions.
This year, Michael Zuckert, Nancy Reeves Dreux Professor and Department Chair of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, will serve as the Lence Master Teacher. Zuckert will be on campus Feb. 17 - 18 and will speak at the following events on the second floor of the M.D. Anderson Library.
- 5:30 p.m., Feb. 17: "Jefferson's Moral Philosophy" in Honors College Commons - The Honors College Phronesis program presents this symposium that is open to the college's faculty, students and alumni.
- noon - 2 p.m., Feb. 18: Lecture on Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in the the Rockwell Pavilion.

Zuckert is an expert on political philosophy, and has published extensively on Jefferson, Plato, Shakespeare, Orwell and contemporary liberal theory. He soon will complete his latest book titled "Completing the Constitution: The Post-Civil War Amendments." Forthcoming works will focus on Shakespeare and Machiavelli. He co-authored and co-produced the public radio series "Mr. Adams and Mr. Jefferson: A Nine Part Drama for the Radio." He also was senior scholar for "Liberty!" (1997), a six-hour public television series on the American Revolution, and served as senior advisor on the PBS series "Benjamin Franklin" (2002) and "Alexander Hamilton" (2007). He is currently head of the new Tocqueville Center for the Study of Religion in American Public Life.
The Ross M. Lence Master Teacher Residency is named for the late UH political science professor. Lence taught at UH from 1971 - 2006. He was a John and Rebecca Moores Scholar and held the Ross M. Lence Distinguished Teaching Chair. Lence was immensely popular with colleagues and students and served as the director for undergraduate studies for the department of political science for 23 years.
"Ross Lence was a legendary teacher at UH. When he died in 2006, a group of his students and colleagues decided to honor his legacy by establishing this master teacher residency," said Honors College dean William Monroe.
