EEOC Commissioner to Speak at UH Health Law Forum April 29

Chai Feldblum, commissioner of the U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EEOC), will speak and lead a panel discussion on "The Future of Civil Rights in the Workplace" Friday (April 29) at a policy forum co-sponsored by the UH Law Center's Health Law & Policy Institute. The commissioner will address challenges facing employers as they deal with dramatic changes in the makeup of the workforce and ever-evolving laws affecting the workplace.

Feldblum, a law professor on leave from the Georgetown University Law Center, joined the five-member EEOC in April 2010. Long active in anti-discrimination and AIDS efforts, Feldblum played a leading role in drafting the ground-breaking Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as well as working in behalf of the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. She also has long been active in efforts to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Following her presentation, Feldblum will participate in a panel discussion with U.S. District Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore and Beth Sufian of Sufian & Passamano, LLP.  Opening remarks for the morning's presentation will be made by UH Law Center Dean Raymond T. Nimmer, Dr. William J. Winslade, director of the Health Law & Policy Institute, and Lex Frieden, professor of health informatics at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston.

Co-sponsor of the policy forum is the the Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center (DBTAC) Southwest ADA Center. DBTAC is located at TIRR Memorial Hermann and promotes voluntary compliance with the ADA.  The center is funded by a grant from the Department of Education.

The Policy Forum is Friday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hyatt Regency Houston, 1200 Louisiana. There is no cost to attend, and free CLE credit will be offered. Please RSVP to Tajauna Arnold at 800-949-4232 x112 or tarnold@bcm.edu
