UH Singers to Answer Question 'What's Opera, Duck?' During Benefit Event

UH Moores Opera Center Taking Talents to Popular Live Music Venue McGonigel’s Mucky Duck

McGonigel's Mucky Duck has long been a home for folk, blues, country and rock performances. On Sept. 25, the popular nightclub will welcome singers from the University of Houston Moores Opera Center to its intimate stage for "What's Opera, Duck?"

This event will provide Houstonians with a fun, casual evening of arias and ensembles at 7 and 9:30 p.m., Sept. 25 at the Mucky Duck (2425 Norfolk St.). Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Moores Opera Center. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Mucky Duck box office. "We will be performing opera's greatest hits and numbers from musical theater. It promises to be an evening filled with favorite tunes with a variety of performers," said Buck Ross, director of the Moores Opera Center.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the UH Moores Opera Center. Since 1986, the center has provided Houstonians with performances of classic and contemporary works. It also has groomed a number of professional performers including Bruce Fowler, Debra Hayes, Barbara Divis, Sam Handley, Joseph Gaines and Javier Abreu. Also among its notable alumni are Barbara Padilla, the 2009 runner up on NBC's "America's Got Talent" and Nathaniel Peake, 2010 recipient of Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the George London Foundation Award.

"Audiences rarely experience opera in this kind of atmosphere," Ross said. It's a chance to not only hear the music but to actually feel the energy that these singers deliver when they're on stage."
