2020 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARS AND MAJOR AWARDS CELEBRATION

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards celebrated their annual Undergraduate Scholars & Major Awards Celebration on October 21, 2020 via Zoom. This year's event featured remarks from Honors College Dean William Monroe, Provost Paula Myrick Short and Ben Rayder, Ph.D., director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Major Awards.

2020 FALL CONVOCATION

Our Fall Convocation event featured remarks from President Renu Khator, Provost Paula Myrick Short and College of Medicine Founding Dean Stephen J. Spann.

The Alumni Address was given by Jennifer Sullivan (’96), M.D., MPH, the secretary of the Family and Social Services Administration for the state of Indiana.

Over 800 people attended this event — The Honors College thanks all of our speakers and attendees for this enthusiastic kickoff to the fall semester.

Grand Challenges Forum

The Grand Challenges Forum (GCF) encourages students to think critically, discuss openly and learn unequivocally. The Honors College, in partnership with University of Houston Alumni Association and Bauer College of Business, sponsor GCF in an effort to expose University of Houston students to great thinkers and doers in Houston, in Texas, and beyond. We welcome a diverse group of distinguished scholars, authors, activists and artists in an effort to further the University’s commitment to intellectual rigor, critical thinking and scholarly excellence. The Grand Challenges Forum offers our students a time to hear a wide range of lectures dedicated to a common theme, which for the 2019-2020 academic year is “JUST KEEP GOING.”

University of Houston, Top-Producing Fulbright Institution

For the first time in its history, the University of Houston is ranked among the top-producing Fulbright institutions in the nation, announced by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. With a record 12 UH students receiving Fulbright awards for research and teaching in 2019-20, UH is one of only two research institutions in Texas to make the prestigious list, published annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education. In the last two years, the University has produced 18 Fulbrights, a significant achievement marking a sharp rise in national competitiveness.

Bonner Leaders Program

The Bonner Leaders are students dedicated to improving lives in the community. They respond to the economic, social and cultural challenges affecting the quality of life in the city of Houston. The Bonners are top academic performers who learn by engaging in the community. Through their project-based service, Bonners learn critical skills, including leadership, teamwork, project planning and time management.

The mission of the Bonner Leaders progam at the University of Houston is to create high-quality educational experiences for students, while simultaneously working to build a better Houston community. We do this by focusing on the factors that perpetuate the cycle of poverty: food insecurity, educational achievement, and community health and nutrition. We believe that working with and through partners not only contributes to the community, but also enriches and enhances the student learning experience.

Common Ground

Hosted at the University of Houston’s Honors College, Common Ground Institute uses the small-group seminar model to bring secondary school teachers together with distinguished faculty from Houston’s premiere colleges and universities.

In a collaborative environment, teachers engage with classic American works as well as literature from other cultures to deepen understanding and encourage perspective. Among the fellows of the Common Ground Teachers Institute are educators just beginning their careers, veterans and mid-career teachers.

What Is the Honors College?

Welcome to the Honors College – a vibrant hub of engaging coursework, rich student life, community collaboration and co-curricular programming at the University of Houston. From study abroad to undergraduate research, from the first-year Human Situation course to the senior honors thesis, students affiliating with the Honors College enjoy the benefits of a small undergraduate college while taking advantage of all that our Tier One research university has to offer.

60 Years of Honors Education

The year 2018 marks 60 years of Honors education at the University of Houston.

The Honors College continues to lead the way forward, both for the University of Houston and for the city of Houston itself.

Mellon Research Scholars Program

The Mellon Research Scholars Program at the University of Houston supports underrepresented students (Hispanic, African American, Pacific Islander) and other undergraduates with a demonstrated commitment to the goal of building a diverse academy in the humanities.

Twenty humanities students will be selected for the Mellon program beginning in spring 2019.

Honors Day of Service

The third annual Honors Day of Service hosted by the Honors Mentorship Program featured over 50 Honors students serving at four different locations. Students gathered on the morning of October 13, 2018 for breakfast and a discussion of the meaning of service and the importance of building community partnerships. The Day of Service reflected a partnership between The Honors Mentorship Program and the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Leadership Honor Society, the Terry Scholars and the Bonner Leaders to recruit volunteers and work with community partners.

Undergraduate Research Day 2018

The University of Houston Office of Undergraduate Research’s 14th annual Undergraduate Research Day took place on Thursday, October 18, 2018 in the M.D. Anderson Library, Rockwell Pavilion, and the Honors College.
