HHP faculty Dr. Thomas Lowder's study of a rare lung disease called lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM for short was recently featured on UH news in an article titled "New Angle on Rare Lung Disease May Improve Quality of Life for Patients". Dr. Lowder is among the few researchers in the country counducting research on LAM which strikes women exclusively, regardless of age, ethnicity, genetics or physical conditioning.

“There are maybe 100 researchers studying this disease in the country and about 1,500 patients in the U.S. with the disease that we know of,” said Thomas Lowder, associate HHP professor and principal investigator.

Lowder is examining how physical activity impacts the quality of life and disease progressions of those living with LAM. The participants engage in training sessions at HHP—lifting weights, running, sprinting and walking. They’re re-assessed every three months.
