From Fellow to Foreign Service: A Talk with a US Diplomat

Interested in representing the US around the world? Come meet Texas’ Diplomat in Residence, Daniel Stewart, to find out more about careers in the foreign service. Daniel Stewart currently serves as the Diplomat in Residence for Texas for the U.S. Department of State. He is responsible for recruiting talented and diverse candidates from across the Lone Star State for Department of State internships and student programs, fellowships, and career opportunities in the U.S. Foreign Service and Civil Service. Daniel has served in numerous assignments abroad and in the United States, most recently leading public engagement, exchanges, and promotion of U.S. higher education across Canada as the Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. Daniel’s other assignments include Cultural Affairs Officer to U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq; Public Affairs Officer at Consulate General Recife, Brazil; Assistant Public Affairs Advisor at the U.S. Mission to NATO, Brussels, Belgium; Assistant Information Officer to U.S. Embassy Pretoria, South Africa; and Consular/Political Officer to the U.S. Embassy in Bamako, Mali. Daniel also served as the public diplomacy desk officer for Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, as a Washington-based Foreign Service recruiter, and as desk officer for Haiti. Daniel also served two years in the Civil Service as the Branch Chief leading internships and fellowship programs for the U.S. Department of State.

Daniel graduated from Morehouse College with a bachelor’s in English and receive a master’s degree of Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
